 The Highland Lodge was formerly a farmhouse built in the 1860’s by John Simpson, a Scott who ran the small family farm with his wife and daughter. The Fred Goodrich family ran the farm in the early 1900’s and sold it to a group of men from Hardwick who planned a resort development: seventy-six cottages would share land for recreation, tennis, a beach on Caspian Lake, and a central lodge for guests and meals. The crash of 1929 ended this venture and the lodge operated on-and-off with a succession of managers and chefs until the Smith family bought it in 1954. David and Carol Smith and Carol’s sister Narcy Boyd raised six children here and operated the lodge in the summer months. In 1973, they laid out cross-country ski trails so the lodge could operate year-round. Today David and Wilhelmina Smith run the lodge with their son Alex and daughter-in-law, Yukiyo.
