Our Invited Guests include: Philip Fradkin, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, environmental historian and author of Wallace Stegner and the American West… Carl Brandt of Brandt & Hochman (Mr.Brandt was Wallace Stegner’s literary agent)… Clive Gray, second son of Peg & Phil Gray….Marion Stegner, who will join us for Friday and Saturday activities. Schedule for Centennial Weekend
Friday, September 25th 2-6 PM Arrival and Check-in (Residential participants) 2-3:30 PM Free time (Residential Participants) 3:30-4:30 PM Viewing of documentary film on Wallace Stegner by KUED/University of Utah, in the Highland Lodge Ski Shop/Playhouse. The documentary, made in 2009, includes interviews with Stegner family members, colleagues, and two of our weekend guests, Stegner biographer Philip Fradkin and Stegner literary agent Carl Brandt of Brandt & Hochman. This event is open to all registrants and the public. The documentary will be shown on Sunday at noon also. 4:30-6 PM. Free time (Residential Participants) 6 PM Dinner in Highland Lodge Dining Room. Group seating, family-style dining. Welcome and Introductions (Non-Residential A la Carte Rates*: $25 +tax, includes dinner, dessert, and evening discussion. Coffee, dessert and discussion only: $12 +tax) 7:30-9:00 PM Stegner Centennial opens with Reading of Wallace Stegner’s Foreword in the “Greensboro History.” “Crossing to Safety” Discussion and Dessert. Discussion led by Clive Gray, Marion Stegner, Anne Hanson, and Willie Smith. Home movie footage of the mule trek send-off (portrayed in “Crossing to Safety”) presented by Clive Gray. Evening ending by 9:30 PM . Saturday, September 26 8:00 AM Family-Style Breakfast in Small Dining Room (Non-Residential A la Carte Rate*: $15 +tax) 10:00 AM Guided Hike to Barr Hill, led by Anne and Eric Hanson and Willie Smith. Arrival at Barr Hill by 11:45 AM. Meet others who drive. (Non-Residential A la Carte Rate*: $12 +tax, includes hike and Highland Lodge box lunch picnic on Barr Hill) 12:00-1 PM Barr Hill Picnic. Tour hiking loop at top for those who wish (about 30 Minutes) 1-2 PM Descent or drive back to Lodge. 2-3:30 Free Time (Residential Participants) 3:30-4:30 Afternoon Tea and Presentations at Highland Lodge by Philip Fradkin and Carl Brandt on their professions, Philip as writer, Carl as literary agent. On Saturday afternoon and evening the Galaxy Bookshop in Hardwick will join us at Highland Lodge and will offer Wallace Stegner books for sale. This is a great opportunity to peruse Stegner books you may not have, and to support our local independent bookseller and one of our Centennial Weekend sponsors. Sunday, September 27 9 AM Family-style Closing Breakfast in Small Dining Room (Non-Residential A la Carte Rate*: $15 +tax, includes breakfast and closing below) 10 AM Closing: Excerpts read by Wallace Stegner on his audio tape “Sense Of Place.” 11 AM Check out 12 Noon: Second showing of Wallace Stegner Documentary (1 hour) in Highland Lodge Ski shop/Playhouse (Open to Public) Lunch available in the dining room 11 AM-2 PM, please order from our menu. The Retreat Weekend rate does not include this meal.

• Read, write, or relax in the rockers on the Highland Lodge porch, overlooking Caspian Lake. • The Greensboro History, a large green paperback book in each guest room and cottage, is an excellent resource for background on the town of Greensboro. • Architectural walking tour of Greensboro (self-guided, ask for book at desk), • Explore sites noted on the Map of Greensboro Author’s Haunts. Please note that this map does not list the homes of Greensboro authors. Wallace Stegner’s home is privately owned and trespassing is not allowed. • Walk the one-mile Porter Brook Environmental Center Nature Trail at Highland Lodge. • Residential guests are welcome to use our tennis court and our beach, pedalboats or kayaks to explore “The Cove” from Crossing to Safety.
