Green wooden rockers on an elegant porch, views of a sparkling lake and distant mountains, an Indian Summer twilight, fantastic food, cozy accommodations, and engaging company discussing contemporary fiction, poetry, and film inspired by and created in the beautiful Northeast Kingdom.

This region, home to Wallace Stegner for decades, is a place that draws many, and once discovered, it’s a place that draws you again and again.

Announcing The Second Annual Wallace Stegner Weekend at Highland Lodge:
Northeast Kingdom Artists Speak about Sense of Place
Friday to Sunday, September 24-26, 2010

Our weekend is the same as last year, the last in September, beginning on Friday the 24th to Sunday the 26th. Our rates are $285 per person for the weekend, double occupancy, with accommodations, all meals from dinner Friday night through breakfast Sunday morning, and events included. Single occupancy rate is $320 for the weekend (9% tax is additional). Special book group rate: come with your book group; for every 5 people in a cottage, one person gets the weekend free!

This year our Stegner-inspired theme is “Sense of Place.” We are celebrating our place, this region of Vermont—the Northeast Kingdom, that Stegner so loved, and where he was inspired to place two novels and several short stories.
All of our guests reside in the Kingdom, and all are recognized for their talent and significant contributions to our lives here; their work has also garnered national recognition and awards. Young adult and children’s book author Natalie Kinsey Warnock, her brother and acclaimed poet Leland Kinsey, writer and oral history expert Charlie Morrissey, and arts and culture impresario and celebrated filmmaker Jay Craven have all agreed to join our weekend. Please see below for further descriptions on each of these talented NEK denizens.

Our weekend includes a panel discussion on “Sense of Place, “ film showings, author talks and readings, and excursions to visit other Stegner and “Crossing to Safety” haunts. We will keep Mr. Stegner in mind, even as we explore and celebrate the way contemporary artists utilize the NEK in their work.

Please help us spread the word! We’d love to fill the lodge and cottages. We are optimistic that with as great a turnout as last year, we can make the Stegner weekend an annual one. We thank our partners, the Galaxy Book Shop in Hardwick and the Greensboro Free Library for their assistance in making our weekend possible.

Stegner “Sense of Place” Weekend Guest Speakers

Our weekend guests include Northeast Kingdom native Natalie Kinsey Warnock, whose young adult and picture books tell the stories of growing up and coming of age in the Northeast Kingdom, from the earliest settler days to today. She has published 20 books, including her first book, an ALA Notable book, The Canada Geese Quilt. Her book , As Long as There are Mountains was selected by the Vermont Humanities Council as a state-wide Vermont Reads story in 2006. Natalie regularly presents to school groups about the importance of capturing stories; she is an inspiration to all who hear her.

Leland Kinsey, Natalie’s brother, also joins us. Author of six books of poetry, Lee’s brilliant, evocative poems powerfully reflect his experience growing up on a family farm here, where h is ancestors settled in the early 1800s. His poetry transcends singular experience to reflect the universal experiences of love, loss, and living. Several of his poems have been featured on National Public Radio’s “Writer’s Almanac” with Garrison Keillor. Most recently, Leland gave the commencement address at Sterling College in May, where he was awarded an honorary degree. He has conducted writing workshops for the Vermont Arts Council and the Children’s Literacy Foundation at over 100 schools in New Hampshire and Vermont.

Charlie Morrissey, oral history expert, editor, and writer joins us also. Former director of the Vermont Historical Society, and author of Vermont: A History, a book in the States and the Nation series. Charlie is an authoritative voice on living and writing in Vermont. With his weekly radio broadcast, “Life in Vermont,” on Vermont’s WDEV, he continuously engages listeners with our fascinating history.

Jay Craven, award-winning film director, screen writer, and producer is also a professor of film studies at Marlboro College. For decades he has served our region as impresario of the arts. In 1981 he founded regional arts organization Catamount Arts. With his company Kingdom County Productions, co-founded with partner Bess O’ Brien, Jay has made seven feature films; three of these are of NEK author Howard Frank Mosher’s novels. His work is the ultimate “sense of place” mission—to capture the characters, lives and spirit of the people in our region and to bridge community and culture with the arts here, where we live.
During our weekend, artist Deborah Holmes’ gorgeous water colors will adorn our walls. After several years of feeling at home in the Kingdom, Deborah has relocated here and continues to paint landscapes and intimate glimpses of life in northern Vermont. Her art gives us a window into the many moods and seasons of our beautiful region.

Suggested “Sense of Place” reading for our weekend: Natalie Kinsey Warnock’s As Long as There are Mountains, and From Dawn to Dusk; Leland Kinsey’s Family Drives and Northern Almanac; Charlie Morrisey’s Vermont: A History, Lynn Stegner’s Pipers at the Gates of Dawn; Wallace Stegner’s Crossing to Safety, his Collected Stories, and his article in Country Journal, August 1979 “Northeast Kingdom;” Jay Craven’s commentaries on working with Howard Frank Mosher and Kris Kristofferson(see www.fledgling films.com)

Going Green is Going Great

The Highland Lodge is seeking to build our future by preserving our past with a 'Going Green Capital Campaign.'

We are currently seeking grants and donations to complete a $150,000 project to insulate the lodge with blown-in foam insulation and the installation of energy-efficient windows. We will work with local Vermont builders and insulation specialists to make sure we look the same, but feel much warmer while using a lot less fuel during the winter months.

Thanks to the generous support of some long-time friends and guests, we're off on a great start toward our goal, and hope to begin the first phase of our renovations this fall. However, we still have a long way to go if we're going to maximize our grant opportunities. To show our appreciation for your generosity, those donating $500 or more will have a small plaque mounted on the lodge room window of their choice (if it's still available.) The plaque will bear your name and a short message. Some messages we've received so far:

"To the Memory of Carol and Dave"

"Happy Times Spent, Wonderful Memories"

For those who can donate more ($2000+) we will be happy to include your plaque in a special place of honor in our small dining room. For more information, please give us a call at 802-533-2647, or send us an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Our Second Annual Wallace Stegner Weekend

Following the great enthusiasm for our first annual Wallace Stegner-inspired literary weekend here at the Lodge in 2009, the Highland Lodge hosts its second Annual Wallace Stegner literary weekend September 24-26.

This year our Stegner-inspired theme is "Sense of Place."  We will be joined by award-winning guest panelists, authors Natalie Kinsey Warnock and Charlie Morrissey, poet Leland Kinsey, and film director and screenwriter, Jay Craven.

The Kinseys, sister and brother, grew up on a family farm here in the Northeast Kingdom region and are still our neighbors today.

Mr. Morrissey is author of Vermont: A History, an expert on oral history, and radio raconteur on WDEV for "Life in Vermont."

Mr. Craven is co-founder of Kingdom County Productions, a professor of film studies at Marlboro College, and has adapted three of Howard Frank Mosher's Northeast Kingdom-inspired stories to film.

Other highlights of the weekend include visits to Crossing to Safety haunts, fantastic meals, and book signings. Book clubs, family groups, couples and individuals are most welcome!

Call Anne at 802-533-2647 to sign up for the two-day weekend which begins Friday afternoon September 24th and ends Sunday, September 26th .  The Highland Lodge website will post updates as the weekend draws closer, and you can always follow the latest news on our Facebook page.

We look forward to seeing you!

Our Tradition Continues
By David & Alex Smith

The Smith Family has welcomed people to Greensboro for years. Nearly half of our guests come from returning families-three generations of them. They come back because they feel like family here: well cared for, well fed, and at ease. They come for the opportunity to enjoy our fields and woods. They run down to our sandy beach to splash into the clear water of Caspian Lake.
Highland Lodge is a safe, warm, comfortable place to stay. Our guests get to know us and our history but sometimes we surprise them with special events, like great live music in the dining room, or the Wallace Stegner Centennial weekend, which enrich our whole community.
When guest children go to our gardens and pick berries for breakfast cereal or herbs for our meals, their names appear on that day's menu for them to discover. The art they create appears on the trees in our red pines. Through the art in the forest, we have a year-round archive of Lodge children through the decades: patches of color on the dark bark over the white snow. Like all of us, these children have meaningful connection to this place.

Our Amazing Staff and Community
About sixty staff prepare the lodge each spring and fall and feed the community daily in our winter and summer seasons. We arrive early and leave late. We love being here and it shows when guests tell of the quality of our service. Most of our staff are with us year after year. Many are your neighbors, and their kids work here too. In a way, our staff community emulates the greater community. Whether it's an art opening, a historical society fundraiser, or clipping the trails in preparation for the ski season, our community shows up. We appreciate that dedication. Without all of you, we wouldn't be here.

Our Tradition Continues
We have been here for 56 years, since 1954. We are four generations  old and are once again reinventing ourselves. We are happy to announce that in October, Willie and David will rest!
They will step down as the de facto parents of the Highland Lodge family to watch and advise the next generation as Alex and Yukiyo step into running the Lodge. They, along with Anne Hanson, Carol Kelley, and all our staff will keep the Lodge the place we love.

Porter Brook Turns Over a New Leaf

In just a few short years, the Porter Brook Environmental Center has grown from a small, summer lodge - sponsored program to a popular camp for children of all ages. To enable the center to grow and better serve the local community, we are seeking non-profit status for the Porter Brook Outdoor and Environmental Center, and are assembling a board to run the operations of these activities.

The PBOEC will run summer activities, education and outreach programs, and will also run the cross country ski center at the lodge during the winter. Carol Cameron Smith kiya in the lupines
August 9, 1918 to March 7, 2010
grandma on the beach
Carol Cameron Smith, known to most of the Highland Lodgers simply as "Ma," died March 7, 2010, at the age of 91. Born August 9, 1918 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, she married David B. Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1939 and they made their home in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they raised four children before moving to Greensboro, Vermont, in March of 1954 to re-establish The Highland Lodge on Craftsbury Road as a summer resort. She was the principal chef for many years and Carol's Cookbook is still a favorite with hungry Highland Lodgers. In 1980, Carol and Dave retired from the Lodge. They traveled to every state in the Union and spent many years with their friends in Pahrump, Nevada.
Ma Smith was a competitive diver and long-distance swimmer, golfer and tennis player, downhill and cross-country skier and loved walking the woods. She was a constant supporter of the Episcopal Church, where she worked as a volunteer, and made strong friendships. She also loved being with, cooking for, and entertaining friends and family, singing the night away at bonfires on the beach, almost as much as dancing with her husband, Dave. He died August 8, 2005. They lived for each other and are now together again.
