Candlelight Dinner at Old Stone House Museum in Brownington Vermont
Originally built as a dormitory for the Orleans County Grammar School, the Old Stone House Museum is a historical granite block building known for its massive structure—and it’s lucky to be around. In the early 20th century, a building company targeted the Grammar School dormitory for its granite to use as blocks for railroad bridges. Its builder has a prominent place in history as well: Alexander Twilight, headmaster of the school, was the first African-American to graduate from college in America and to be elected to public office. Within its imposing four-story granite walls are thirty rooms that exhibit furniture, paintings, folk art, and everyday knick-knacks that tell the story of early Orleans County. Nearby, two barns also display the daily life of agriculture in the area with horse-drawn transportation as well as maple sugar equipment.
In total, the Old Stone House Museum is actually seven historic buildings resting on sixty acres of beautiful grounds that are part of the Brownington Historic District, a National Historic Place. The observation tower is one building you can’t miss that offers a stunning panorama of the landscape, especially during fall foliage season. Take a drive up Prospect Hill to find this unforgettable vista of the mountains and valleys. The Pond is another location that becomes picturesque in the fall and an excellent spot for a picnic lunch after your self-guided walking tour of the beautiful Brownington Historic District. Admission is $10 for adults and open hours are Wednesdays through Sundays, 11AM-5PM up until October 15th so don’t miss the opportunity to experience some authentic Vermont history and attractions.
