Eat Local in the Northeast Kingdom

Call it what you want. Farm to table. Farm to plate. Field to fork. Take your pick. It all means the same thing and it’s redefining every fabric of our lives. So bring your appetite. The movement that serves these mouthwatering fruits, vegetables, meats, and cheeses, fresh from the farm six miles down the road, is growing faster than arugula.

Eating local has countless benefits to ourselves and the community as a whole and chowing down on some locally-sourced entrees during your stay at the Highland Lodge allows you to truly get to know our unique region by sharing the food we have grown out of our own soil.

Encouraged by the Farm to Plate Network, a legislative food system collaboration started in 2009, Vermont has been seeking to double access to local food by 2020. This supports local farmers and increases the authenticity of the food we put into our bodies.

Take a little drive (about 40 minutes) north and dig into Newport’s Lago Trattoria, an Italian restaurant that is all about farm-to-table ingredients. While you’re there, stop by the Northeast Kingdom Tasting Center for dozens of local food artisans, a pub, bakery, coffee shop, and a cider-and-spirits tasting bar. Beans by the Border and Newport Ciderhouse Bar and Grill are great options, and check out Lago Trattoria’s brand new sister restaurant, The Warehouse Vermont. With the town’s slogan “Fresh by Nature,” you’re guaranteed to fall in love with the food you will find in Newport. After all, the way to a town’s heart is through your stomach. Besides the booming locavore community found in Newport and throughout the rest of the Northeast Kingdom that all serve delicious food, you are, of course, welcome to dine in our house bar and kitchen. We serve a full bar that features Hill Farmstead craft beer on tap and a fresh pub menu that uses local ingredients, meat, and produce.
